If you were thinking of going in for the 3 Day Novel contest this year…

… then you might as well forget it.

“Why?” I hear you ask (well maybe one of you) and the answer is that not only am I taking part again (third year in a row) but I have me a tag team partner this time, who is none other than:

It’s over, it’s game over man!

Flashspec 2 line up announced!

Here’s the final line up; I thought I had one day left to try and squeeze another in there but it seems I misjudged dates slightly…

Flashspec 2 line up

Cool huh?

It’s review time!

Hello is that Mark ‘I don’t seem to like reading books’ Deniz that’s reviewing again?

Indeed it is:

The Two Swords: R. A. Salvatore

She sneaked up on me!

I didn’t even see

tag me until it was too late!

Them there’s the rools:

• Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
• People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
• At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.

1. I find it extremely difficult to write in silence. I usually have music I am very familiar with on and usually at quite high volume.

2. When eating I save the best till last. I have to finish off with a bit of the best on the plate.

3. I often feel I have a hidden thought ‘lane’ as the second I stop thinking about something, I realise I have a story there in the recesses. It feels like I am constantly creating stories but other thoughts go parallel to them.

4. I am the worst shoe buyer ever. It doesn’t matter what size it says on the bottom, they are usually too small or too big.

5. I have usually decided what the next album I put on will be before the last track of the previous one starts. If there is a gap between albums my friends usually ask if there’s something wrong with the stereo.

6. My friends call me extremely sociable, those who meet me find me easy to get on with, whereas I consider myself an introvert and hate people (as a collective).

7. If I dream intensely, I wake up with a split lip (I write this as it happened last night again).

8. I’m a list freak, give me a topic any topic and I’ll usually come up wiuth a top 5. This was shown in spectacular form when a friend of a friend asked me if I had a top five jam list and then watched how the thought process kicked in…

I tag (as is my wont)

“Don’t walk away in silence”

Well it seems this weekend was a big weekend in more ways than just sorting out some piles of papers and cds.

The short version is that I’m going to be around on Live Journal a lot less from next week onwards.

I spent many hours alone in the flat this weekend, sorting out my CDs and a huge mountain of paperwork that has been hanging over me since we gave Maddoc his own room and turned our bedroom into a bedroom/study.

Especially after the cramped, claustrophobic feel of the flat over the last few weeks (with the whole decoration of the son and heir’s swish new room) it was such a refreshing feeling to see the flat in this state yesterday evening.

However, I digress, slightly.

So this Live Journal thing, well I’ve been having fun and I’ve met some wonderful people, people who I have ended up working with, starting a business with, people who I have taken advice from, laughed with, cried with, shared my soul with.

Things seem to be changing now though, and I’m not sure if it’s me or LJ (or both), as I get the impression that my flist are just not posting like they used to and if they are for whatever reason I’m missing the posts. There has certainly been a change in commenting too and even though last week was especially strange with loss of internet and Live Journal’s problems with notifications, it seems my posts are not read as much as they used to be. This is of course a generalisation as a few of the list are commenting more than ever before.

Whatever is going on, it has made me less enthusiastic about posting and resulted in me thinking more about the whole blogging thing. It was interesting to read then this weekend that at least one of my flist was going to be blogging less and one decided it was time to blog more, racking up over 17 posts in two days…

Other factors have been taken into account, with the fact that next Wednesday, mine and

‘s publishing company Eneit Press will be open for business and that means a hell of a lot of work. Instead of being on paternity leave, grabbing the odd hour here and there to post and comment, I’ll be a full-time businessman, needing to spend much more quality time with my son, due to not seeing him through the days as I do now.

I also have reviews I want to get on top of and stories I HAVE to write; these things have been plaguing me for a while now and to get back into the swing will make me feel a lot more accomplished.

Upon saying this, I’m not stopping my LJ activity, just minimising it greatly. I think I write, on average, around fifteen posts a week. This figure I am aiming to drop to one, maybe two a week. I am hoping to be able to announce things related to the business and keep you up-to-date with everything going on over here, touching base with the LJ faithful still interested in reading.

I think two of the key moments happened this week, the first being Maddoc falling off the sofa, because I thought Etina was watching him and I was busy replying to a comment and on Friday when I typed a post, I heard Maddoc repeating the same word over and over again. It was only when I ‘spared’ him a moment that I noticed that the reason he was repeating the word was because he was trying to show me that he knew the word for ‘bird’ and he was attempting to say it and point so that I could confirm it for him. Talk about guilt trip!

Live Journal has given me so much over the last year or so and it feels like I’m closing a very important chapter, whilst getting ready for a new unknown one. It remains to be seen what I am actually going to do as the move from the monkey to the current journal didn’t go as expected, so it’s anyone’s guess. I still haven’t decided whether this week is going to be a mighty send off with all sorts of craziness, or whether it’s going to be a mellow fade out.

I just hope I can make the one post a week interesting enough for you lot to hang around!

Yeah, it’s LJ, yeah it sucks, big time today!

I just got a notification that I received a comment on my LJ. When did I receive that comment? Why at 08:30 this morn, wtf?

No wonder I feel like nobody’s been bothered about my posts today, it’s cause you’ve been commenting and I haven’t been told!

*looks all put out*

Today we were in THAT shopping centre (you know the one) for over an hour and it was very busy and man is it scary. I know I hate normal people in their ‘real’ world at the best of times but this was, this was simply too much!

As an attempt to recover I am going through my to-watch film list. I thought the wife would be watching one with me but she has decided to go for a swim instead (ooh Friday night fun!). That means my options are quite a bit more as I can have horror in the pile, not that I want to watch one really after recent disappointments…

Still not feeling 100% but feeling a lot better and in a much better mood as the flat is soooo much spacier than before… it’s like we gained three new rooms, not one!

*Just remembered that his copy of High Fidelity turned up this week*

Been lots of chats about the business this week and we’re looking at early June as a big lift-off type thang. I’ll keep you updated.

Ciao

Fridays are getting a makeover around here

I have noticed that a few of the flist have Friday specials, I am aware also that the monkey (bless his little cotton socks) was a fan of the Friday music videos.

After a few thoughts, my plan is to revive the worst album covers of all time, that only made two entries last year and also go for the Friday lyric slot.

Every week I’m going to take a song that has wonderful lyrics and post those lyrics for your enjoyment. I’m also going to dedicate the lyrics to one of my flist, for whatever reason.

And so we start today with my god of modern music Tom Waits and his fabulous track Small Change, from 1976. I dedicate this one to

and

, fellow Tom devotees!

Small change got rained on with his own .38
And nobody flinched down by the arcade
And the marquise weren’t weeping
They went stark-raving mad
And the cabbies were the only ones
That really had it made
And his cold trousers were twisted
And the sirens high and shrill
And crumpled in his fist was a five-dollar bill
And the naked mannikins with their
Cheshire grins
And the raconteurs
And roustabouts said buddy
Come on in
Cause, cause the dreams ain’t broken down here now
Now, they’re walking with a limp
Now that small change got rained on with his own .38

And nobody flinched down by the arcade
And the burglar alarm’s been disconnected
And the newsmen start to rattle
And the cops are tellin’ jokes
About some whore house in Seattle
And the fire hydrants plead the 5th Amendment
And the furniture’s bargains galore
But the blood is by the jukebox
On an old linoleum floor
And what a hot rain on 42nd Street
And now the umbrellas ain’t got a chance
And the newsboy’s a lunatic
With stains on his pants
Cause, cause small change got rained on with his own .38

And no one’s gone over to close his eyes
And there’s a racing form in his pocket
Circled “Blue Boots” in the 3rd
And the cashier at the clothing store
He didn’t say a word as the
Siren tears the night in half
And someone lost his wallet
Well it’s surveillance of assailants
If that’s whatchawannacallit
And the whores hike up their skirts
And fish for drug-store prophylactics
With their mouths cut just like
Razor blades and their eyes are like stilettos
And her radiator’s steaming
And her teeth are in a wreck
Now she won’t let you kiss her
But what the hell do you expect
And the Gypsies are tragic and if you
Wanna to buy perfume, well
They’ll bark you down like
Carneys… sell you Christmas cards in June
But, but small change got rained on with his own .38

And his headstone’s
A gumball machine
No more chewing gum
Or baseball cards or
overcoats or dreams and
someone is hosing down the sidewalk
and he’s only in his teens
Cause, cause small change got rained on with his own .38

And a fistful of dollars can’t change that
And someone copped his watch fob
And someone got his ring
And the newsboy got his porkpie Stetson hat
And the tuberculosis old men
At the Nelson wheeze and cough
And someone will head south
Until this whole thing cools off cause

Small change got rained on with his own .38
Yea small change got rained on with his own .38

I’m going to bed after this… promise…

The meme goes something like this:

Type your name and the word ‘needs’ into google, thereafter copy and paste what comes up.

And behold verily I did:

‘Mark Needs A Chick’ – Several people have called me foul recently…

‘I’ve resorted to using this simple form for all my butt-kissing needs. … Mark’s Apology Note Generator’ – It’s an apology? Interesting.

‘MARK NEEDS MORE ROOM.’ – I do? Yes, I do!

‘Mark does need a more complete overall strategy and philosophy of how talent should be acquired.’ – And I’m on it, as of now!

‘Mark Needs Your Help.’ – He does, he always does.

‘Mark needs to use superpowers to design PYPU.’ – Of course I do, that is if I understood more that two words here!

‘Who Needs Donuts?’ – I do, me, me, me!

‘I decide my butt needs a tan so everything comes off.’ – How true!

‘I think everyone else who criticizes Mark needs to desperately read about how his world works.’ – I couldn’t have said it better myself, this blogger is in my head!

‘The MARK takes pride in assisting guests with special needs.’ – Oh I do that baby!

Nightmares in my mind’s eye

Last night, a night of nightmares and lack of sleep, Maddoc felt it too; we are both returning to bed in the hope of gaining lost slumber, he poorly, me mentally drained.

There is a need to write, I can feel it.

Thank god this is paternity leave and not publishing company time…

I did it!

I watched the whole bloody series!

How bloody good was it, I was so impressed!

Curious to know what twists were coming up though that I didn’t know about as I so had the story figured after episode 10!

*looks clever*

Now we have to wait until series two for Doakes and Rita and their suspicions. Unfortunately I don’t think this a series that can go on too much longer, maybe one more series?

Yay for Angel and yay for the new lieutenant, she’s hot!

The tension levels were so high watching that and it was great fun, whilst being very much a social critique, and that just makes it so so much better!

Roll on season two!
