Apparently In Bad Dreams has a winning cover…

… as if we didn’t know that already!

Battle of the Covers – result

Halloween’s just fab isn’t it!

Vanity Press or not?

Was talking to a friend yesterday regarding a deal they had been offered by a publisher. The deal was basically that they were going to offer friend an e-book contract, with the option of the book going into print (using POD) if the friend paid a set-up fee.

I, along with a few others, warned said friend that this sounded like a Vanity Press deal and was quickly told that this was not the case at all. It was also pointed out that I am very new to the publishing world and that the friend had been informed by others much more experienced than me that this was a fair deal.

In this my friend has a point and so I bow to superior knowledge.

I’m curious as to my flist’s opinions on this as I am very much of the belief that if I want to publish an author’s work, not only should my company pay them for that but that any printing costs should be dealt with and paid for by the company too.

What say thee?

Album of the year for 2007

Will be as difficult a decision as in 2005.

That is all.

It’s Halloween!

Or will be very soon, for those living over this side of the world!

Maybe you want to improve your writing skills:

We said we were going places!

It’s time! Any tips?

Now is maybe not the best time, what with NaNoWriMo on the way but I’m looking at buying the new computer very soon. I’m off to the shop in a few hours to ask them what system they can put together for me and for what price. I had a friend come with me last time and he said they were very reasonable and didn’t get the impression they were going to rip me off.

I had an offer from a friend of building a system for me but after all my sagas with computers, I don’t want to get into a non-warranty situation from day one. I think having a chat with these guys about my needs may help.

I’m getting 2GB memory (or maybe even 3!) but I was wondering if you lot had any tips for products I should think of/stay well away from/must buy in terms of processors, hard drives, graphics cards and the like?

Any tips would be most welcome.

Wish me luck!

Thanks for voting guys!

Well that’s some climbing by calendula_witch there! Otherwise it’s pretty much business as usual.

Those evasive resolutions for the year

I don’t seem to have updated these since July, which although I can’t quite believe, there’s not a lot I can do about it now…

Anyway here they are today, as I don’t think I’ll have a chance to do them next weekend, what with NaNoWriMo and promos and stuff…

Health:

Water consumption (in litres):

Have pretty much failed abysmally here, I was keeping on track for a while but then it fell apart.

Weight loss (in kilos):

The muscle growth is still affecting this but it’s dropping anyway!

Exercise (twice a week):

There have been chats about this in terms of what a session is, we usually talk about a session of fitness in terms of one hour (as practised in gyms and the like). If we are counting my three hour bike rides as three sessions then the bottom shiny bar applies. If however we are looking at the strict one session = one session rule, regardless of how long you are out for, then the top shiny bar applies.

This is still do-able although Australia and preparation for the book just before put a big dent in it all. etina has been pushing me with runs over the last two weeks though…

Life:

Move home:
Not a chance, there have been so many other things taking priority and we have to give the agency three months notice before we leave.

Bye bye sucker, yet another that makes its last appearance here (until the December assessment)!

Films seen:

Another one off the list, although this one is not that impressive, being as it is such a paltry goal… oh well.

Literature:

Books read:

This has been getting worse as the weeks are going on. I complained about being eight behind last time and now it’s thirteen. It’s not going to happen is it?

Dickens books:

Writing:

Short Stories:

I need to double check this, as my stats haven’t been updated for a while. It’s not looking do-able though as I’m only working on one and the novel starts soon.

ASif reviews:

I’ve just written one that needs editing and I’m reading one that’s for this but not as good as planned.

SF Reader reviews:

Not happy with this one, seem to have been stuck on one of the reviews and it won’t let me go!

Edit book:
Knocked on the head, just not gonna happen. Going to write a book instead… squee!

Ups and downs here but as the beginning of December’s chart should look a little lighter, I can maybe concentrate on what’s left as there’s only a few guaranteed failures.

*writes a to-do list*

OMFG!

We’ve only gone and had one of the stories in In Bad Dreams nominated for a fucking Bram Stoker Award!

*is in a state of amazement*

I just do not fucking believe this!

*dances*

*badly*

*a lot*

There’s still a few hours till the polls close…

… although I think the decision has been made for me, in fact when in town this morning I came up with an idea for structure for the PADUFN (Post-Apocalyptic Dark Urban Fantasy Novel).

I also realised why I’ve not been on top form the last week or so and why I’ve not been sleeping well. It’s not the recovery from Australia and jetlag, it was the need to write all along.

I am so psyched up about this project and am looking forward to getting the ‘funky bunch fingers’[1] in action once more!
